Can Acupuncture and Herbs Help with Your Anxiety?

Anxiety presents in many shapes and sizes.  It might present as general over worry, or nervousness and fear in social settings, or questioning of self worth and full blown panic attacks.  And when any of these symptoms start interfering with your daily quality of life, it is worth addressing.  Traditional Chinese medicine, through acupuncture and herbs can offer some relief.

Chinese medicine associates the emotions of anger, joy, sadness, fear, and worry with the different organ systems of the body.  And imbalance of the organ systems and emotions can lead to disturbance of the shen(spirit) and lead to anxiety.  We use acupuncture and herbs to correct these imbalances and calm the spirit.  In addition, acupuncture stimulates the body’s intrinsic resources to promote healing, reduces inflammation, and prompts a relaxation response from the parasympathetic nervous system.

Chinese medicine considers the whole body system.  We use these additional symptoms along with observation of the tongue, skin, hair, and pulse to help determine what organ systems are out of balance.  And since each patient is unique, the acupuncture points and herbal blends used for patients are unique too.  However, a few Chinese herbs have been found to be particularly effective for treating anxiety, including bupleurum and jujube.

Bupleurum is a revered and commonly used Chinese herb that is used to regulate the body’s energy, detox, and relieve liver tension.  It has been studied for its effectiveness in treating anxiety as well as depression.  Jujube has long been used as a tonic for the shen and to help improve sleep.
